Managing Director, FutureChalk Software, Inc.

Dan has been in the computing industry since 1976 (before the personal computer). He started with a service bureau and worked there for 10 years as a system manager on the companies Digital Equipment PDP 11/70 and VAX systems. From there he moved into the position of technical sales representative for COGNOS supporting their 4GL product.

During his time with COGNOS he started FutureChalk Software in 1984 and in 1991 went into the company full time. It was during this time of developing FutureChalk Software that he discovered OMNIS (without numbers).

Since that time he has developed applications using all the flavours of OMNIS over the years. He currently does consulting in Database Design, Project Management and Systems Design for large corporations.
He also teaches part time at Simon Fraser University. Most recently he has been working on RFID applications.

The Component Store - the forgotten powerhouse

This session will delve into the Component Store provided by Omnis Studio and how this under utilized feature can be used to speed up and standardize development. We will also discuss how it can be utilized as the beginnings of a Data Dictionary. Other areas such as styles, formats and other system features of Omnis can also be leveraged for optimal use in the development life cycle. The session should provide some thought provoking discussions.

Designing efficient and flexible data structures

Data is the most important asset of the business and our job as developers is to make this information easy to access and use.
This session will discuss techniques on how to design data structures that are efficient, flexible and easy to implement in programs. Discuss transactions, index analysis and data distribution concepts. Depending on time some general discussions about different databases.
